Michigan State is constructing a brand new addition to the football building and Darien Harris and Tre Mosley take us inside.
East Lansing, Mich. — In the era of NIL and a transfer portal, facilities are among the most critical aspects of recruiting. Having top-tier facilities help show your program as a brand. If your football team has elite facilities with massive weight rooms, a modern and luxurious locker room, and more, it indicates that the university and its boosters are serious about spending money on athletics.
Michigan State‘s new “Tom Izzo” football building is going to be a massive upgrade and we just got a sneak peek of it today.
Darien Harris, MSU’s director of player relations and program advancement, and wide receiver Tre Mosley led a virtual tour. While the building is still under construction, this was an opportunity for fans to see a video of the inside of the construction zone.
What’s inside the new football building?
The new $78 million dollar “Tom Izzo Football Building” has a lot in store. The building is 65,000 square feet and looks like something straight out of the future.
The new building will include a brand new upgraded state-of-the-art locker room. Inside there will be 126 total lockers — 120 of those are for current players, and six lockers are left over for former Michigan State players to use when they’re in town.
Perhaps the crown jewel of the building is the magnificent weight room. It’s broken up across two floors. The first floor houses the “sports science” part of the training area. This will include various strength and conditioning tools like cardio equipment, plyo boxes, a sprint ramp, and more.
On the second floor is your traditional weight room. Just a lot bigger than normal. This level will house all lifting and weight equipment including an astounding 28 power racks.
Of course, an important aspect of being an athlete is the recovery. The brand-new building will house a 35×8 hot/cold recovery pool. There also is a player’s lounge with games like foosball and pop-a-shot, as well as TVs. This offers the players a nice play to relax and recuperate, and bond with their teammates.
The building also has something to offer future Spartans: the recruiting corridor.
“Recruiting is the lifeblood of any program, and the recruiting corridor is an opportunity for Michigan State to create a WOW moment that will impress young recruits. This will be the flashiest space in the entire building with high-impact materials and a feature stair visible from the lobby,” writes The Spartan Fund.
The building is expected to be substantially completed by the fall, and it can’t get here soon enough.
