Former Michigan State star Travis Trice has won the MVP of his league in Puerto Rico over former NBA big man Jared Sullinger.

A name that doesn’t get talked about enough in terms of the Tom Izzo era of Michigan State basketball is Travis Trice.

The former starting point guard who led the Spartans to a Final Four back in 2015 is one of the most underrated players of the Izzo era. He was a fan favorite and always seemed to hit the big shots when needed.

And while he didn’t get to carry that over into the NBA because he just didn’t have the size, he is continuing that big-shot-making ability in Puerto Rico. He currently plays for Criollos de Caguas of the Baloncesto Superior Nacional in Puerto Rico and he’s a superstar in that league.

Is anyone really surprised? He almost single-handedly carried the Spartans to that 2015 Final Four.

How much of a superstar is Trice in Puerto Rico? Well, he’s the best player in the league, apparently. On Thursday night, Trice was named the MVP of the BSN, beating out for NBA and Ohio State big man Jared Sullinger.

With this major award, Trice becomes the third-ever MVP of Criollos de Caguas and he did so by averaging 21.3 points and 7.7 assists per game. He was one of the most electric players in the entire league and you could do a quick search of his highlights to see just how he’s been killing it. Almost every night, he’s making crazy passes, lighting it up from deep, and putting defenders on skates.

Also, shoutout to Sullinger who was a star at Ohio State from 2010-12 and averaged over 17 points per game for the Buckeyes. He spent some time in the NBA, but after his time in the league fizzled out, he joined the BSN. He fell just short of Trice in the MVP voting.

It’s great to see former Spartans finding major success.
