In a tournament that had Canada, the home country go out in the quarterfinals, the Team USA juniors team had the opportunity to do something special: win back-to-back World Juniors titles. If they were going to do that, they would have to avenge the loss to Finland in pool play, a game they lost in overtime, 4-3 — a game that Trey Augustine would probably say was not good enough.

This was an opportunity for revenge and payback for the team while also an opportunity for Augustine to put himself in the driver’s seat as the greatest USA junior goalie and that is exactly what happened.

Team USA would go down early in the first period as Finland scored on a good opportunity but that wouldn’t last long until James Hagens tied things at 1-1. Finland would score quickly after that and even go up 3-1 early in the second. This was not the start that Trey Augustine or Team USA would want but things started to click.

The U.S. scored two late goals and Trey started to make big save after big save.

The score stayed the same throughout the third period, forcing overtime at 3-3. This was the exact spot this team was in pool play but when you have Augustine in net, you feel pretty good that the result would be different this time and it was. The US ended up scoring the winning goal and avenging their earlier loss. This meant Team USA was back-to-back champs, cementing a legacy for this team and Augustine.

That legacy is Trey Augustine being the greatest, if not one of the greatest goalies to ever represent Team USA in the World Junior Championships. In this tournament, he broke the record for most wins as a goalie for the US junior team with 12. He’s also the first goalie to ever medal three times in this tournament, one being a bronze and now two golds. With these accomplishments, Augustine now goes out as one of the greatest hockey players in World Juniors history and will be representing the senior team in the future.
