Tom Izzo and Michigan State basketball have run the Big Ten for the past couple of decades. This stat proves it.
If there’s one program that can be considered the class of the Big Ten on the hardwood, it would have to be Michigan State basketball. For years, the Spartans have dominated on the court and Tom Izzo has owned the Big Ten.
The Big Ten runs through East Lansing.
Don’t believe me? All you have to do is check out Michigan State’s record vs. the rest of the Big Ten over the past two-plus decades. Spartan fan @SpartyWRLD on Twitter has been putting out some great stats recently and on Friday, he posted Michigan State’s record against every Big Ten team since 2000.
And Michigan State has a winning record against everyone.
There are only three teams in which Michigan State has a win percentage of under .600 against: Illinois, Purdue, and Wisconsin. This shouldn’t come as a major surprise. All three of those teams have been contending for Big Ten titles for years. Illinois did have quite the cold stretch in the 2010s, but pre-2010 the Illini were a major thorn in Michigan State’s side. Purdue and Wisconsin have always been a battle.
I was fairly surprised by the record against Northwestern considering I feel like I can point out each one of those losses. Boo Buie is likely responsible for half of them and I’ll always remember that Kevin Coble-led upset in 2009.
The Minnesota dominance is also slightly surprising. Although the Gophers aren’t good at the moment, they haven’t always been a walk in the park. An .800 win percentage against Minnesota is wild.
Michigan State has also dominated teams like Iowa, Michigan, Rutgers, Indiana, and Ohio State over the years. I think the Iowa and Indiana records are surprising, too. Iowa seems to always win at home and Indiana is a basketball school.
Let’s hope this trend of dominating the other Big Ten schools continues.
