Michigan State football could be taking a serious look at an Oregon State transfer tight end who broke out in 2023.
The transfer portal just got a little more interesting for Michigan State football on Wednesday afternoon.
Star sophomore Oregon State tight end Jack Velling is officially in the transfer portal and it feels like Michigan State has as good of a chance as anyone to land him. For obvious reasons, he’ll be a top target for the staff as tight ends coach Brian Wozniak is also in East Lansing with Jonathan Smith.
A big reason for Velling’s success this past season was Wozniak. He’s one of the better tight end coaches in the country, producing second-round pick Luke Musgrave this past year. He is a rookie with the Packers and had 33 catches for 341 yards and a touchdown before going on IR. And it feels like Velling is next in line to head to the NFL after learning under Wozniak.
Velling had 29 catches for 438 yards and eight touchdowns this past season as a breakout performer in that offense and he would be a huge addition to Michigan State’s tight end room.
Imagine a trio of tight ends like Maliq Carr, Brennan Parachek, and Velling. That would make up the most talented tight end room that Michigan State has had in years and one of the best groups in the country. Carr is a freak athlete, Parachek is a budding star, and Velling looks like a future pro.
Hopefully the relationship that Wozniak built with Velling will guide him to East Lansing. The only concern is that he’s from Seattle so he may want to stay closer to home, but if he wants the best opportunity to go pro, he could follow his coaches to Michigan State. Plus, a familiar face at quarterback wouldn’t hurt — assuming Aidan Chiles becomes a Spartan.
Go get this kid.
