Michigan State football is going to be in the market for some transfers and Oregon State cornerback Jermod McCoy is a name to watch.
The transfer portal window opening has already been crazy. There have been over 1,000 players entering their names, and Michigan State football coach Jonathan Smith is keeping his eye on some key guys.
One of those guys could be true freshman cornerback and Oregon State starter Jermod McCoy.
McCoy started “several” games according to Chris Hummer and had 31 tackles and two picks. He was one of the best freshman cornerbacks in the country and that’s a position group of need for the Spartans. The fact that Michigan State has Blue Adams, McCoy’s position coach from Oregon State, should only help the Spartans’ chances.
The Spartans have some key guys back at corner like Charles Brantley, Dillon Tatum, and Chance Rucker (hopefully) but adding a guy like McCoy gives that group some depth and experience. He has starting experience in the Power Five and played really well.
The familiarity with Smith and Adams is only going to make this decision tougher on McCoy who hails from Texas.
Early on, the favorite to land the former three-star would have to be Michigan State as he didn’t have any other major offers out of high school. Sure, he could go back home, but why not follow the coaches who gave him a chance and continue to play on the biggest stage? He could come right in and earn a starting spot from day one.
If you don’t think Smith and Adams are on the phone with him right now, you’re probably mistaken.
Michigan State needs all the secondary help it can get after a horrible past few years and McCoy would be a great start to the Smith era. It’s time to bring him home.
