Michigan State football: CMU using Spartan Shadows as bulletin-board material (Photo)

Week 1 Michigan State football opponent CMU is using a Spartan Shadows article as bulletin-board material for Friday night.

There’s an unwritten rule in college athletics: never give an opponent bulletin-board material. Oftentimes, it just happens because of a slip of the tongue or an accident. Other times, it just happens because of over-confidence. Rarely does it happen because a fan-run sports blog wrote something about that opposing team.

Central Michigan didn’t get that memo, apparently.

Our own Michigan State football (and other sports) fan-run blog is apparently being used as motivation for Central Michigan on Friday night. A picture leaked on Twitter of Central’s scoreboard which had a quote on it from an article on Spartan Shadows. It was an article ranking the opponents on Michigan State’s 2023 schedule from easiest to toughest.

The second-easiest was Central Michigan.

Let me tell you, this thought immediately jumped into my brain: “If we lose, this is all our fault.”

OK, that’s ridiculous to think, but it wasn’t ideal to see that Central was using one of our articles by Daily MSU as motivation to beat Michigan State on Friday. That just didn’t sit too well with me.

But thinking more about it, the Chippewas are asking us to call them a tougher opponent than a Big Ten foe. It may end up being true in the end, but right now, outside of Northwestern and maybe Indiana, I don’t think they’re better than any Big Ten teams. Again, I could be wrong, but this isn’t a crazy statement.

It’s cool to see that an FBS program has something we wrote here on their minds, but I’m just hoping this doesn’t backfire on Friday night when Central comes to town.

I’ll probably be rooting harder than anyone for a Michigan State football win because, well, if the Spartans lose, I may never live this one down. Just the nature of the business.
