Michigan State football: Could the Spartans land another 2024 QB?

Michigan State football has picked up a couple of quarterbacks in recent weeks, but could another soon be headed to East Lansing?

The Michigan State football quarterback room not that long ago was looking very bleak. Noah Kim, Katin Houser, and Sam Leavitt all transferred within a week of each other, leaving the quarterback room empty. We all knew it wouldn’t stay empty for long, but that feeling of having nobody at that important of a position is not a good one.

That’s when Jonathan Smith put his head down and got to work. He turned what was a pretty bad situation into a very healthy quarterback room within a couple weeks. The quarterback room is already in a good place for the future, and it has the chance to improve still.

Michigan State’s current QB room

The Spartans got their QB1 very early in the transfer portal cycle in Aidan Chiles. As I’m sure you all know by now, he was the No. 1 quarterback in the portal according to 247Sports and chose to follow Jonathan Smith from Oregon State. Chiles played extremely well as a true freshman for the Beavers in the little playing time that he got. Chiles completed 24-of-35 passes for 308 yards and four touchdowns during his freshman season. He also ran the ball for 79 yards and three more scores as well. That’s a pretty solid freshman year if you ask me.

Smith however wasn’t done after getting the commitment from Chiles. His next move came in the 2024 high school class in Alessio Milivojevic. He is an extremely underrated three-star prospect out of Wheaton, Ill. I don’t think he’ll have a chance at beating Chiles out for the starting spot, but he is a great addition to the quarterback room.

Another QB commit coming soon?

The way the Spartans’ quarterback room stands now is just fine for the future. We have QB1 Aidan Chiles who will have 2-3 more years in East Lansing depending on if he leaves for the NFL early or not. MSU also has Milivojevic as the backup who can develop under Chiles. He can be ready to compete for and potentially step into the starting role once Chiles leaves Michigan State. Two quarterbacks, however, aren’t enough to have a comfortable room.

Enter Tyler Cherry.

Cherry is a four-star quarterback also in the 2024 class. He is from Greenwood, Ind., and is the No. 302 player in the class and 20th-ranked quarterback. He is yet to commit to a school, but Michigan State is in a very good spot. Cherry recently decommitted from Duke and has made it no secret who his options are. Michigan State is battling with Indiana for Tyler’s commitment, and by all accounts it’s a 50/50 race as we head into the end of the recruiting cycle.

This would be a massive recruitment to win. Aidan is our future at quarterback and Alessio is a great option as his backup, but as I mentioned you need more than two gunslungers in your room to be comfortable. Cherry would be able to come in and compete with Alessio for the backup job behind Chiles. One of those two guys would also be the best option as Chiles replacement once his time is done in East Lansing.

Regardless of what Cherry does, the future of the quarterback room is bright. Jonathan Smith did a great job after losing the three quarterbacks on the roster, and we all have to feel confident in the direction in which he has this position heading.
