Through two weeks of action, Michigan State football has one of the best resumes in the nation.
In fact, according to ESPN’s FPI, Michigan State has the fifth-best resume in the country after two weeks.
When you think about it, that’s incredibly impressive. Obviously you have to give Northern Illinois the top spot for going into South Bend and beating a top-10 Notre Dame team after the Irish went on the road to beat Texas A&M. Next is Texas for beating No. 10 Michigan on the road. And then there’s Cal for winning at Auburn and beating Payton Thorne followed by Georgia with a blowout win over Clemson and then the Spartans.
Honestly, not bad company to have in the top five there right behind Georgia and Texas.
It’s pretty cool to see Jonathan Smith’s team get some recognition for beating a tough Maryland team on the road in Week 2. The Terrapins were expected to be in the top half of the Big Ten standings this season and after they beat UConn 50-7 in the opener, everyone expected them to roll over the Spartans. But Aidan Chiles and Michigan State didn’t waver and even pieced together a late comeback to win 27-24 on a last-second field goal.
Down 24-17 late in the fourth quarter, a 77-yard touchdown bomb from Chiles to Nick Marsh pulled the Spartans back even before a huge defensive stand and ensuing Jonathan Kim game-winner.
This team has some juice and there’s excitement within the program for the first time in two years.
After an ugly opener against FAU, Michigan State bounced back and looked 10 times better against Maryland. If the Spartans can beat Prairie View A&M and Boston College over the next two weeks, we could see them in the AP Top 25.
