Michigan State football is hosting one of the top prospects in the state who just decommitted from Boston College.

Lost in all the chaos that has been this Michigan State football season has been the recruiting aspect of the program.

With Mel Tucker getting fired and Harlon Barnett taking over as the interim head coach for the next six weeks, many would just assume that recruiting would fall by the wayside.

I mean, three guys have already decommitted over the past couple of weeks in four-stars Reggie Powers and Andrew Dennis and three-star Syair Torrence. It definitely hurts the outlook of the class, but Michigan State still needs to put forth an effort on the trail. These coaches will still move forward and look for jobs and they can’t have “quit recruiting halfway through 2023” on the resume.

It looks like Barnett and Co. are compiling a solid list of visitors for this weekend as the Spartans host No. 2 Michigan.

One of those visitors happens to be top-10 in-state prospect and recent Boston College decommit Desman Stephens II.

This could be a very important recruitment when it comes to the 2024 class as Stephens has to be familiar with Michigan State as he’s grown up in the state. He’s from Clarkston, Mich., and holds offers from all of the directional schools. His list of offers is relatively modest at 19 with only Power Five scholarships coming from Boston College, Duke, Indiana, Louisville, Purdue, and Vanderbilt.

Michigan State could be next.

That list of offers is surprisingly mild considering Stephens is a strong 6-foot-2.5, 208-pound projected safety who has the potential to start at the Power Five level, according to Allen Trieu on his 247Sports profile. He’s also ranked the No. 483 prospect in the country, a borderline four-star. He’s the No. 9 prospect in the state.

Stephens would be a nice pick-up at this point in the process considering everything going on with the program.
