Michigan State football loses commitment from 4-star DB

Michigan State football has now lost two commitments since the Mel Tucker saga hit the media. Who decommitted now?

Last week, Michigan State football lost its first commit in the post-Mel Tucker era as three-star Florida cornerback Camren Campbell reopened his recruitment. At this point, you can’t blame these kids for keeping their options open.

On Tuesday, the Spartans lost their second commit.

Four-star safety Reggie Powers decommitted from Michigan State after being committed since mid-June. This doesn’t come as a huge surprise seeing as Powers has been one of the fastest-rising prospects in the class, going from a three-star to a four-star recruit. He’s jumped into the top 400 nationally and his rise has been on everyone’s radar in recent weeks.

Clearly he’s drawing more interest from top programs after a strong start to his senior season and he could see the offers start rolling in.

Michigan State interim head coach Harlon Barnett has to do some damage control and he has the difficult job of trying to retain talent while making sure the program doesn’t completely crumble under his watch. He didn’t ask to be in this tough position, but he’s done a solid job thus far, but there could be a mass exodus when Michigan State officially announces the firing of Tucker.

The decommitment of Powers isn’t a huge surprise, though. He has been considered one of the best commits in Michigan State’s class and he has some big-time offers like Ohio State, Oklahoma, and UCLA, and his sheet of over 30 scholarships is likely to skyrocket.

At this point, you can’t do anything but support these kids who were put through an unfortunate situation by a coach that they trusted. This is not easy for anyone.

Michigan State’s class is down to 11 commits now and is ranked No. 55 in the nation.
