Michigan State football has lost its first commitment since Mel Tucker was suspended last week. Who decommitted?

Michigan State football has officially lost its first commitment since the Mel Tucker saga began. Saturday night after a brutal home loss to Maryland, Michigan State lost three-star 2024 commit Camren Campbell.

The 2024 class for the Spartans is already lacking the number of players to complete a full class. Losing a commitment is less than ideal at this stage in the game. Unfortunately, this is likely a sign of things to come. When you put together what Michigan State has produced on the field this season plus the Mel Tucker firing, the shine of Spartans football is all but gone.

It’s going to be important for the program to already be doing their homework for their next head coach. Realistically, the team needs to have their guy in their sights and ready to make an official offer the first day they are able to. A 30-day transfer window is getting ready to open for all of the current players on this year’s roster. The team will likely lose a handful of guys when that time comes. Campbell’s decommitment likely won’t be the last for the 2024 class either.

The next head coach that Michigan State hires will certainly have his work cut out for him. At the top of the list will include keeping current players, as well as many of the talented players in next year’s group. The benefit of college football nowadays is that while the transfer portal takes away, it also gives. It’s likely a large portion of Michigan State’s scholarship players next year will come through the portal after Michigan State brings in a new head coach.

Certainly, no one can fault these young talented players for looking elsewhere. There’s only a small window of time they have to capitalize on their talent and develop for a chance at the professional level. The lack of stability in East Lansing right now isn’t appealing. The goal for the Spartans is to bring in a coach that has a reputation for stability and the possibility of longevity
