Michigan State football picked up a commitment from three-star in-state linebacker Di’Mari Malone on Sunday evening.

Sunday was a big day for Michigan State football.

While Mother’s Day was in full swing, Jonathan Smith was adding to his 2024 roster as well as to his 2025 recruiting class. He picked up a commitment from Old Dominion defensive tackle transfer Jalen Satchell as well as another from three-star in-state linebacker Di’Mari Malone.

Malone-to-Michigan State was picking up some steam earlier on Sunday as the Spartans received a number of crystal balls on 247Sports to land him. Hours later, he made it official and committed to the Spartans.

The three-star linebacker from Macomb (Mich.) Dakota held offers from the likes of Illinois, Minnesota, Pitt, Indiana, Kansas, Rutgers, and West Virginia, among others. The Spartans and Illini were considered the favorites, but Michigan State won out for the in-state target.

Although he’s not the biggest linebacker recruit, standing just 6-foot-0 and 200 pounds, he still has time to add to that frame and I’d expect him to look a lot different by the time he gets to campus in 2025. And this is yet another solid addition for Joe Rossi and the defense as the linebacking unit just continues to get better.

In fact, the Spartans landed Marcellius Pulliam earlier this week and have a young star like Jordan Hall already manning the middle of the defense. This is already the strongest position group on the roster and it looks like it will remain that way for a while. Rossi has some quality pieces to work with and a future duo of starting linebackers in Brady Pretzlaff and Malone is intriguing.

The 2025 class has now grown to three with borderline four-star quarterback Leo Hannan committed as well as three-star in-state linebacker Charles White. The future is looking bright in East Lansing.
