In the middle of the bye week, first-year Michigan State football coach Jonathan Smith is hard at work in the transfer portal.

Earlier this week, the first-year head coach reached out to Indiana’s leading receiver from 2023 who recently entered the transfer portal. And now, it looks like Smith is keeping his sights set on the portal as he is reportedly one of five coaches who have reached out to South Carolina EDGE transfer Bangally Kamara.

Michigan State, Cal, Syracuse, Toledo, and SMU are the schools that have reportedly contacted Kamara since he hit the transfer portal this fall after spending less than a season with South Carolina. Before he was with the Gamecocks, he played four years at Pitt.

With Pitt, Kamara had 104 total tackles, 10 tackles for loss, three sacks, an interception, and eight pass breakups in the two years leading up to his transfer to South Carolina. In just four games with the Gamecocks, he had nine total tackles and a tackle for loss.

Kamara has been a fairly effective and productive linebacker and edge rusher for Pitt and then saw his role decrease a bit with South Carolina which seemingly led to his transfer.

Michigan State could use some edge rushers and that’s why Smith is all-in on targeting the veteran Kamara.

The Spartans will be losing some key players along the defensive line and at linebacker after this season such as Jordan Turner, Cal Haladay, and Khris Bogle, among others. Adding Kamara to the mix would give the Spartans a much-needed veteran presence who has a history of success at the edge rusher position at a Power Four program.

The other potential suitors shouldn’t be too difficult to beat out for Smith and Michigan State football but the early transfer portal process can be a long one. Kamara still has plenty of time to make a decision, but we’ll see if he visits East Lansing before he decides.
