It’s time for Michigan State football to get back into the portal and target some big names that could help right away.

It’s no secret that the biggest weakness of last year’s Michigan State football team was the secondary.

The secondary last year only had one interception, a pick-six by Charles Brantley against Ohio State. Michigan State was 82nd in the nation in opposing passing yards per game, averaging 237.2 yards per game through the air.

The secondary showed improvement throughout the year, however. In the first four losses, MSU gave up an average of 335 passing yards to opponents. In the following three losses (Michigan, Indiana, Penn State), the only quarterback with over 200 passing yards was Sean Clifford (202 yards).

J.J. McCarthy only produced 167 passing yards for Michigan against the Spartans, and Indiana quarterback Dexter Williams was held to 31 (!!) yards through the air.

The strong finish by the secondary was a great sign and hopefully means there will be an improvement compared to last year’s dreadful start, but Michigan State could still add some talent on the back end of their defense.

One option for that is Cam’Ron Kelly.

Kelly is a defensive back that has bounced around a few different schools. He was a four-star ranked out of high school and committed to Auburn. He never played a snap of football for the Tigers.

Kelly transferred to North Carolina and has racked up some accomplishments in his four seasons as a Tar Heel. For his career, he has 179 total tackles, five interceptions, seven passes defended, and one forced fumble.

In 2021 Kelly was good enough to earn third-team All-ACC honors.

This offseason, Kelly transferred from UNC to Virginia and was with Virginia in the spring. Now Kelly has decided to take his talents elsewhere for his final season in college football and I believe Mel Tucker and company should take a look.
