Michigan State football: Updated odds released for next head coach

BetMichigan has released updated odds for the next Michigan State football coach and some of the options are surprising.

Friday will be the last day of the nightmarish 2023 Michigan State football season as the Spartans face Penn State with (likely) no bowl game to be earned. It would take a lot to happen for the Spartans to make a bowl at 5-7.

More likely than not, Michigan State will be entering full-blown hiring mode.

The Spartans are one of a handful of Power Five teams looking for a head coach this offseason and they’ve had a leg up by having the longest time to do research and reach out to candidates.

A lot of names have been thrown around, but it’s always interesting to see what oddsmakers think. Well, there have been some new odds released as of Tuesday and some of the hypothetical names are surprising.

According to BetMichigan.com, Mike Elko leads the way with the best odds to be the Spartans’ next head coach.

Behind Elko is Kansas’ Lance Leipold with +600 odds which is surprising given the fact that talks of him being the next head coach have died down after he recently stated that he wants his last job to be in Lawrence. Plus, his Jayhawks have been struggling a bit lately.

Jason Candle being the third-best odds is a bit concerning as is Harlon Barnett having the same odds as Urban Meyer. Jonathan Smith and Jedd Fisch are names that we could all talk ourselves into loving, but Charles Huff and Matt Campbell would probably be disappointing.

Michigan State fans will only have to wait a little longer to find out who the next head coach is. We’re nearing the finish line of what has felt like a decades-long search. Let’s hope that Alan Haller makes the right choice because this is who will lead the Spartans into the new Big Ten.
