The first round of the NCAA regional tournament is underway and the men’s Michigan State golf team is off to a strong start.
The first round of the men’s NCAA Golf Regional Tournament has come to an end and Michigan State golf finds itself tied for second place at 12 under par. The Spartans are six shots back from first-place Georgia.
MSU is playing host to this year’s regional tournament which is taking place at Eagle Eye Golf Club. The tournament consists of 13 teams with the top five teams qualifying for the NCAA Championships.
Michigan State was led by Troy Taylor II who is tied for second place overall after a five under par (66) round. Ashton McCulloch sits tied for 12th at 3-under and Drew Hackett and Bradley Smithson both shot 2-under which is good for tied for 20th. August Meekhof rounds out the five Spartan golfers with a 1-under outing.
The Spartans still have two more rounds to play the next two days, but MSU finds itself seven shots ahead of sixth place. Although that is a comfortable lead above the cut line, scores can change fast in team golf tournaments as each team’s top four scores from their five players count towards the overall team score.
MSU is only one of four teams in the 13-team field not ranked, so this is as good of a start as I think the team could have hoped for. The Spartans must stay focused if they want to qualify for the NCAA Championships, but they are off to a fantastic start.
