The men’s Michigan State golf team struggled in the final round of regionals and failed to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Wednesday was the final chance for the men’s Michigan State golf team to make it through to the NCAA Championships following the regional at Eagle Eye Golf Club. And the Spartans, unfortunately, fell short of qualifying for the NCAA Championships.
The Spartans started the day in fifth place, seven shots ahead of sixth, which would have been just good enough to qualify for the finals, but they struggled to get any momentum going on Wednesday.
Michigan State finished the day with a team total of 10-over, taking them to 1-under for the tournament. This was good enough for a seventh-place finish out of 13 teams, which is two places shy of qualification.
The Spartans were led by Drew Hackett, who finished tied for 20th at 1-under for the tournament.
Georgia took home the regional title at 29-under followed by other qualifying teams in Illinois, Oregon, Florida, and Texas.
Michigan State was the 10th-ranked team in this regional, so it was able to finish above its ranking and was in a position to qualify after the first two rounds. But unfortunately, the Spartans ran out of steam and were not able to seal the deal on the final day.
The Spartans had a solid year and have nothing to be ashamed about. They represented their university well and competed until the very end. This loss will sting, but the Spartans played well and will be back next year.
