The women’s Michigan State golf team will be partaking in the NCAA Championships this weekend, running through May 24.
The women’s Michigan State golf team is ready to take on the National Championships beginning on May 19. The tournament is set to run until May 24 and consists of multiple rounds that the Spartans will have to navigate to become national champions.
The NCAA Championships consist of 30 teams that will battle it out for the 72 holes to determine who will move on to the final match play event. After three rounds of 18 holes, the bottom 15 teams will be eliminated leaving one final 18-hole round where the top eight teams will qualify for the final match play round. The individual NCAA champion will also be crowned after this initial 72 holes of play.
If Michigan State were to finish among the top eight teams, it will receive its seed based on its finish and will begin the final match play round. In this round, a normal tournament bracket is set up based on their seeding and the teams will play head-to-head to determine a winner who will move on to the next round. This continues until two teams remain after two rounds of match play who will face off in one final match play to determine the team national champion.
MSU qualified for the NCAA Championships by winning their first-ever Regional title with an 8-over par score, good enough to edge out Duke by three strokes. This also marks the 13th time in 26 seasons that Michigan State has qualified for the NCAA Championships under head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll.
Sophomore Brooke Biermann also tied for first place individually at 3-under.
