On Thursday, Michigan State football and Max Bullough sent another offer out as the Spartans look to continue to build their 2027 class. The Spartans offered Tyson Washington, a top 20 player in his class among Virginia prospects.

What to Know About Tyson Washington

Washington is a 6-foot-3, 205-pound linebacker from The St. James Performance Academy (VA.). The Springfield native ranks as the no. 830 prospect in the recruiting class, no. 69 linebacker in the class, and no. 18 player in Virginia, per 247Sports. He is the no. 2 linebacker from Virginia, behind Noah Glover, who is a projected Georgia commit.

The Spartans are Washington’s 10th Power Four offer, and join Rutgers, Maryland, and Penn State among Big 10 offers for the talented prospect. During spring football, Washington made visits to Rutgers and Penn State, along with UConn.

Washington has an athletic background, playing basketball earlier in his high school career along with being a two-way player on the gridiron, serving as a wide receiver on offense. In his Hudl highlights, he had clips as an outside linebacker along with a stand up EDGE rusher. The linebacker has very solid coverage and processing, with a knack for sniffing out screens and delivering punishing blows.

He served as a team captain this year, with his team sweeping through the season with an 8-1 record, per MaxPreps.

Who is Michigan State football competing with for Washington?

The main competition for the Spartans is in-conference foe Penn State, along with the ACC trio of Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, and Syracuse. All four teams have locked in official visits with the linebacker.

The Hokies, in particular, appear to be the favorites, with On3 giving James Franklin’s squad over a 31% chance of landing the in-state star.

Clemson also has recently came calling, along with the University of Virginia, as both teams offered Washington in the last week.

Michigan State football has some ground to make up to be a legitimate contender with Washington.

Linebacker Room Outlook

The Spartans are set to lose three linebackers to graduation this upcoming offseason, as Jordan Hall, Cam Stodghill, and Caleb Wheatland are all entering their senior campaigns. It is worth noting that Hall might be eligible for another season if the NCAA passes a ruling on five seasons of eligibility in five years, as Hall did not take a redshirt and is in his fourth season of college football.

As it stands, the Spartans have four scheduled linebacker visits during the spring cycle.
