Michigan State football commit Andrew Dennis earned his fourth star on 247Sports. He has jumped into the top 200.
This is welcomed news to Michigan State football fans.
Michigan State recruiting has started to create some momentum for its 2024 class in recent weeks. After having just five commits a month ago, the Spartans have added another four within the last two weeks.
One of those additions was then three-star offensive tackle Andrew Dennis from Mount Pleasant. He committed to the Spartans on April 8. At the time he was ranked as the 13th best player in the state of Michigan. However, he is starting to gain more attention as more people see the tape that attracted Mel Tucker and Chris Kapilovic to him.
With more exposure, Dennis has now been bumped from a three-star prospect to a four-star. This will help increase the overall ranking for Michigan State’s 2024 class.
What we’re seeing with Dennis is likely going to become a trend for Michigan State. From an outside perspective, it seems that there’s been a shift in the coaching staff’s perspective on recruiting.
Over the last couple of years, the Spartans were bringing in high-rated recruits for all out official visits but frequently saw themselves listed in players top-four lists only to not be selected time and time again.
Michigan State is still in pursuit of high level talent with players like David Stone, Nick Marsh, Anthony Carrie, Jason Brown, and more.
This time around, though, it appears the staff is trying to identify under-the-radar talent as well.
From the time the Spartans received the commitment from Dennis until now, nothing has changed. His tape is the same. His talent is the same. He’s simply risen because he’s gained more notice. The Spartans had an advantage by being early.
Finding these sorts of diamond-in-the-rough type players that have the potential to outproduce their rankings or star status is what makes good teams great. As with Dennis, I’m predicting we see a similar situation play out with Luniewski twins. Mercer and Charlton Luniewski recently committed to Michigan State and have the size and skillset to be dominant players. And 247Sports currently has Mercer listed as the No. 848 player in the country and Charlton at No. 1,458. It remains to be seen if they make a full star jump like Dennis, but they’ll both shoot up rankings lists in the near future and look like even better finds for the Spartans.
It should be a welcomed sight for Spartan fans that this staff is able to identify talent before the consensus.
