Michigan State football has needs in the secondary and they could be met by Louisiana defensive back transfer Trey Amos.
East Lansing, Mich. – It’s no secret that the Michigan State football secondary was a weakness last season — and the season before that. With the new era of college football and the free agency, sorry, transfer portal, Mel Tucker and the rest of the staff are targeting some players to improve their defense.
One of those targets is Trey Amos.
Amos is a sophomore cornerback from the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns. Last season he racked up 36 total tackles and tacked on eight passes defended.
As a recruit coming out of high school, Amos flew a little under the radar. Both 247Sports and ESPN ranked him as a three-star prospect. That was a kind evaluation compared to Rivals, who ranked him as a two-star prospect.
Amos officially entered the transfer portal on April 13, according to On3 Sports. The defensive back didn’t publicly make his announcement however until May 1 on Twitter. That’s when the floodgates opened.
The former three-star prospect whose best offers consisted of Louisiana, Arkansas State, and Louisiana Tech quickly began racking up offers from some of the best programs in the nation.
Less than an hour after Amos’ public announcement, he revealed that he had already received an offer from Alabama (according to his Twitter page).
Other schools now in the Amos sweepstakes are Auburn, LSU, Texas A&M, Florida, Miami, Ole Miss, Michigan, Oregon, Oklahoma, and Michigan State.
Tucker’s staff has extended an offer to Amos, and he would be a huge addition to the secondary. The transfer portal has been kind to the secondary with Charles Brantley’s recent decision to return. Could the transfer portal give another quality defensive back to the Spartans?
This could potentially be the first pickup for Mark Diethorn, the new director of player personnel and recruiting for MSU. In his past positions, he’s had success overseeing and using the transfer portal. It would be nice for the Spartans to have success with acquiring Amos.
