The women’s Michigan State golf team has advanced to the national championship after winning its regional this week.
For the 14th time in program history and 12th under Coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll, the women’s Michigan State golf team advances to the national championship taking place in Arizona.
Going into this past weekend, Michigan State was the 6-seed and had some work to do. That work started with a fast start in the first round when Michigan State shot 3-under. While Round 2 was not as good as Round 1, the women’s team still headed into the final day in first place. If the women’s team ended with just a solid day, they would have a good chance to advance and that is exactly what they did.
With a score of 872, Michigan State won its first-ever regional by shooting 8-over, winning by three strokes.
Not only is this huge for the program’s future, it means that they have momentum going into the national championship. Michigan State will definitely not be the favorite to win the championship but this is a really good start going into it.
This start is all because of Brooke Biermann who tied for first by shooting 3-under in the regional tournament. This is Brooke’s best collegiate finish and third-best 54-hole score. Brooke was not alone as both Valentina Rossi and Leila Raines finished in the top 15, respectively.
With these great performances, hopefully that will continue to translate to the national championship, where the women’s team has a chance to bring one home to Michigan State.
Congrats to the women’s team on winning regionals and good luck at the national championship.
